Only a few months after I got to Puerto Rico after my TBI, a journalist came to see my therapies one day. She witnessed what my day in therapy was like, talking to me, my mom, and my therapists.

This was my first chance to share my story with the world, or at least the island. It gave me the chance to be recognized, not by people who know someone who told them about me, but by someone who read the article. I felt so happy to be in the newspaper, even if I wasn’t writing. How many people get the chance to have two pages written about them in one of the most read newspapers in Puerto Rico? With pictures and everything? And then be recognized by people who read it? And hopefully made some difference in someone’s life?

It’s an honor to be told the newspaper want’s to write an article about you, not a group you are in, just you. I hope this article helped anyone who was facing a similar situation, knew someone that was in a similar situation, or just anybody who was interested. Even if it only helped, brought hope, or was an example for anyone, it was worth it and that makes me happy.

I’m an aspiring writer still looking for exactly what I want to write about, with a lot of creativity, imagination and desire to write. I studied Writing and Rhetoric at Syracuse University where I explored many different sides of writing through my classes and extracurricular activities in order to narrow my search for an identity as a writer. I have written for Citrus TV Noticias and La Voz magazine, both of which gave me the chance to explore different mediums in which to write in. Through Citrus TV Noticias I also gained experience in translating from English to Spanish and vice versa, which is also something that I would be interested in working on since I am fluent in both of these languages. I was also an intern at Syracuse University Press where I got hands on experience in what goes into actually editing and publishing a book. Through out the last four years I have faced a lot of challenges, which helped chape the person I am today. After being in a tragic car accident, being in comma, having a Traumatic Brain Injury, and being in therapy for over a year, I am a new me, willing to face challenges and knowing how to deal with them. I want to write about my accident and life after it to help others, show them it can be done and help in any way I can.

  2. Wow, Kiki! I hadn’t seen that article. Cool! You bet you’re making a difference in people’s lives. You’re making a difference in mine. When I see how positive you are all the time, how hard you’ve worked and continue to work, and how far you’ve come along in only a couple of years, you inspire me to stop being so negative and to fight, fight, fight!
