The 88th Academy Awards were held last night at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California. I don’t know about everybody else, but I was waiting for two things as I watched:

  1. Actor in a Leading Role
  2. Diversity issue

The diversity issue was addressed from the beginning by host Chris Rock in the opening monologue, by asking, why is this coming up now, at the 88th Academy Awards? This had happened before, why is the issue coming out now? I read an article that said people did not like his monologue; that the crowd was not laughing, but that is not what I saw on TV. I saw and heard people laughing, but I don’t know if that was just me.

And if you do your research, black actors and actresses have been nominated, and won. Not a lot of them, but there are a few, this year they weren’t, but there have been other years. They have also been nominated in other categories, and won. Yes, it’s mostly white people who get nominated and win, but it’s just an award. What’s important is that every one involved in the film did their best, and that it reached at least one person. If one person got the message you were trying to share, you did it. That’s the whole point of it, sharing your message and story with other people.

If were going to complain about that, Puerto Ricans have only been nominated 10 times, three of which have won.

The story that had most people paying attention was the story of how Leonardo DiCaprio was always a nominee, never the Oscar winner. Everybody was waiting for him to win, people said he truly deserved it for his role in The Revenant, and he finally got it. He won the Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role.

The rest of the awards were a little uneventful for me. Mad Max, which I didn’t see, or want to see, won a lot of awards.

I’m an aspiring writer still looking for exactly what I want to write about, with a lot of creativity, imagination and desire to write. I studied Writing and Rhetoric at Syracuse University where I explored many different sides of writing through my classes and extracurricular activities in order to narrow my search for an identity as a writer. I have written for Citrus TV Noticias and La Voz magazine, both of which gave me the chance to explore different mediums in which to write in. Through Citrus TV Noticias I also gained experience in translating from English to Spanish and vice versa, which is also something that I would be interested in working on since I am fluent in both of these languages. I was also an intern at Syracuse University Press where I got hands on experience in what goes into actually editing and publishing a book. Through out the last four years I have faced a lot of challenges, which helped chape the person I am today. After being in a tragic car accident, being in comma, having a Traumatic Brain Injury, and being in therapy for over a year, I am a new me, willing to face challenges and knowing how to deal with them. I want to write about my accident and life after it to help others, show them it can be done and help in any way I can.
