This weekend I completed the Hunger 10k, second race in the 10K Challenge I started in January. We started in El Caracol and finished in El Parque Agroturistico Ecologico (Agroturistic Ecological Park) in Dorado.

There were some complications with the parking lot before the race so it started a little late. There were no clouds so the sun was shining, and even though we were running down a road right next to the beach and there was some breeze, it was still very hot. Luckily there was more than enough water available for us at various oasis on the route. They were big water bottles, which aren’t the best during races; you can’t really drink that much water when you’re running. I think it’s a waste of water and money giving water bottles, big or small, during races, but me and a lot of other runners used them to pour it over our heads.

My plan for this race had been to run at least the first three miles; I was sure I could do that because I have done it before. I was very proud when I finished the first mile in 11:54 minutes. It may just be about a minute faster than my usual 13 minute miles during training, but one minute is a lot. I was pretty confident after that and thought maybe I could keep running at that same pace for the rest of the race, but I was wrong. My average pace today was 13:21, which is great especially since I thought I was taking longer than usual.

Now that I see the stats from my watch, I see that I did a lot better than I thought I did. It wasn’t my fastest 10k but it wasn’t my slowest.

I have two more on the next two weeks; my plan is to take it easy in the one next weekend and give it all I’ve got in the third one.
