As we celebrate Three King’s Day today, my family can’t help but make fun of me for the stress and fear this used to cause me when I was growing up. During this holiday, the tradition is that the three kings who brought gifts to Jesus after his birth, bring children presents. The three kings, Melchor, Gaspar and Baltazar come in their camels to bring presents for the kids. The children are told to leave a box of grass for the camels.

This is where my fear came in, three camels, in my house, eating grass? What if they decided to go to my room. No. I made my parents put the grass as close to the front door as possible. I didn’t understand why they thought this was funny. My family still makes fun of me for it. But what I didn’t understand at the time was why no one else had a problem with camels in their house. I still had a little problem with the big man and three kings but they brought me presents and put them under the tree so that wasn’t such a big problem and I knew the reindeers stayed outside. The food for the camels was inside the house, so I had a big problem with that. I was afraid they would be unsupervised and could possibly come into my room while I was sleeping.

I always spent a great day celebrating with all my family, eating good food but I was so happy when I learned the truth and was finally able to go to sleep on January 5th without fear or stress that I would wake up with a camel, or three, looking at me.
