Eight years ago, a few members of my family who volunteered to help and I, fixed what had once been an office and then a storage room, into my very own apartment. We emptied it, cleaned it, painted the walls, fixed the bathroom and made a kitchen. It’s still my proudest project but I was running out of room.
I had known for a while that I needed to make a change, but I was a little scared. I had made small changes throughout the years but they were small, like getting a new sofa and tv stand and moving them, but nothing big. This time the change would be bigger because I wanted and needed a real closet, the small open closet I had been using since I moved in and the cupboard in the living room, but they weren’t enough anymore.
So after my long run on Saturday morning, we headed out to get everything needed for my closet: the shelves, drawer chest and I also got a purse hanger. Once we had those, it was time to get everything; from my bed, to my shoes; out of my room. I had things laying everywhere, some in my living room and table, and the rest spread out everywhere in my parents’ house. As I started to look at what I would keep, donate or throw out, my stepdad started putting together the drawer chests and later the shelves on the wall.

My clothes, shoes and purses all have their designated place in the closet, but I still haven’t finished putting everything where it goes. That’s taking me a little longer than it should but between work, running and everything else, I only have a little time everyday to get some things in place. I hope to be done by the weekend so I can focus in getting the rest of the apartment in order.

By making the room into a closet, I now have a studio apartment and it feels a little weird sleeping in between the kitchen and living room. I think I’m going to need a room divider or maybe reorganize some of the furniture in the studio but the most difficult part, making the closet, is done.
A million thanks to my mom and stepdad for all their help with this huge project. Jose put in so much work into making my closet, from building the drawer chests to putting the closet cabinets together and moving the furniture. My mom helped me move the stuff out and bring it back in and organize everything.
