This year for Easter Weekend, my family decided to change our usual destination from the south west of Puerto Rico to the south east to the island of Vieques. This surprise change was exciting because I had not been there for more than a day in almost 15 years. Three days there would give us time to enjoy the beautiful beaches in the island.

Surprisingly, we were able to find rooms in a hotel and tickets for four people and a car on the ferry at the last minute. It seemed too good to be true, but that short vacation was just what we needed. It was an escape from reality, nothing to worry about, just enjoying good food and relaxing at the beach.

We thought maybe the weather would give us a hard time at the beach with dangerous rip currents and wind warnings all over Puerto Rico but it was safer in Vieques. I think because of this, the beaches weren’t that crowded and I was able to walk and run a little. I wasn’t able to run the distance that I wanted but just running a little, on those beaches, was amazing.

It also brought back a lot of memories, especially for my mom and aunt who visited the island growing up. The food brought them a lot of memories from their grandparents and father who were from Vieques. They wanted to have arepas from Vieques, just like their grandmother made them, because they don’t make them like that anywhere else. We also couldn’t help thinking about my grandfather who loved the island, always told great stories of being there growing up and of his time working to get the US Navy out of the island.

It was the perfect Easter weekend, with great food, activities, and company.
