This morning, I attended my first sewing class. I had only sewn a few times, about eight years ago under the careful watch of my aunt, who is an expert.
This course Sewing for Beginners, is very appropriate for me, but I still felt a little intimidated at first. I thought everyone would have more experience than me, but it turns out there’s a little bit of everything.
The first thing we had to learn today was how to use the sewing machine. My machine is brand new; I got it yesterday, so it was very exciting learning what all the pieces were for, but instead of having to memorize all of it, we got down to work. Using the machine is a much better way for me to learn than trying to memorize a list of steps.

We learned how to wind the thread and the bobbin and thread the needle. Threading the needle was very difficult at first, but after a few tries it got a little easier. After those first few steps we quickly got to trying to stitch a piece of fabric.

I was able to stitch a line on a single piece of fabric, which was exciting but I wasn’t able to do the next step, stitching two pieces of fabric together. I was too busy trying to thread the needle again before I got started on that, when class was over.

I’m going to have to keep practicing at home and get more comfortable using the machine because next week we’re going to start making a bag. I didn’t think we would get started on a project so fast but I picked out the fabric after class so now I’m really looking forward to it.
