I have been looking forward to today for months. Week after week, I went to sewing class, thinking this is it, today I’ll finish the dress, but it never was. There were always more steps I wasn’t expecting or I made a mistake, had to unsew something and sew it again. But today was the last day of class, today everyone was supposed to finish.

I only had to put the zipper, sew the hem and cut off the extra thread that was hanging. Seemed simple enough and I quickly started to work on the zipper. I quickly got frustrated once I thought I had finished because I could still see it clearly on the back of the dress but it was supposed to be an invisible zipper. The first thought in my mind was I’m going to have to unsew it and do it again.

I calmed down when the teacher told me don’t you dare unsew it, that’s perfect. You could still see it because I wasn’t done yet. I still had to sew one more part so it would be hidden.

I was already incredibly proud of myself for finishing my dress yesterday but the weekend wasn’t over yet.  This morning I was running the 5k Criollos race, my last race of the year. I wasn’t sure how this race would go because last year it was pretty difficult. It was only my third race with Freddy’s Runners so I was still new to this, but it was very different this year. It was a lot better because it was in the morning instead of the afternoon so it was not that hot. They also changed the route, this time it had no hills, as opposed to last year where we started going downhill and then had to go back uphill to finish.

Today I set out to run the entire race, and this time I was able too, I didn’t even walk to take water; I just kept jogging while I quickly got a drink of water and kept going. Because I was running, I didn’t have a lot of time to take a lot of pictures along the way like I usually do. The couple of pictures I took, I took while I jogged too. This, as well as not constantly checking my watch, not because I have self control but because I forgot to put it on before I left home, I think helped a lot in being able to do this.

I wanted to walk but I knew I was near the finish line; I could see the baseball stadium where the race ended and I knew if I walked it would be a struggle to start running again. After I got so far, I couldn’t quit so close to the finish line.

I finished the race in 37:46 minutes. That is two minutes faster than my last 5k and the fastest I have run in 7 months.

I’m very proud of both of my accomplishments this weekend as well as Titi Margo and the rest of the people in my class who also finished their projects and everyone who finished or volunteered at this 5k.
