That one weird Uber ride

I love using Uber, it’s the easiest way to get to and back from work and the great majority of times they are very pleasant rides with very nice people. Most Uber drivers are nice and start a conversation, which makes the ride a lot better and less awkward.

But from time to time there’s an Uber driver who just doesn’t like to talk and I get it, people who are shy because I used to be one, but if you are shy, giving strangers rides in your car is not the job for you.

On my ride to work this morning, the Uber app that was giving directions was the only one talking. I said a few things to which he responded with one syllable words. If I get the hint that they don’t want to talk to me, I’m not even going to try.

But the no talking was not the problem, the music that made me feel like I was waiting at the doctors office wasn’t the problem either, although it did make me slightly uncomfortable. The thing that really chocked me was that from the direction we where coming from, my office was across the street from us. Everyone who has driven me to work just looks for a place to turn around so they can drop me off in front of the building and I don’t have to get out of the car and walk in the middle of the street. But not today, today he just stopped there, regardless of the other cars behind him and told me to have a good day.

I usually take some time to process things like this but not today, I don’t think I even let him finish telling me to have a good day before asking nicely to drop me off in front of the building. I told him that other Ubers usually do that and I wanted to add that it’s common curtesy and sense but I didn’t want to be rude or have my own Uber rating to go down.

It’s still a little hard to believe than an Uber driver would just stop the car in the middle of the avenue, expect me to get out and walk across with nowhere to cross safely. This is not meant as a criticism of Uber, I love Uber, but this was very odd. He didn’t get the five star rating I usually give.
