This Sunday I ran my fourth race of the year and my race for the month of March, the San Patricio (Saint Patrick) 5k.. This time, I joined four of my coworkers who had asked me to find a race we could do together. I chose this one because it’s a very well known race and I knew it would be well organized and we wouldn’t have problems.

This was the second time I did this race, but this year was different because I was joined by some of my coworkers who had been asking me since last year to find a race we could do. I chose this race because, even though it’s up to about 5,000 runners, it has been done for 30 years so it’s organized.

I wanted their first experience with a 5k to be something organized with enough water for the participants, and the route well marked and secure for the participants. I’m very happy to say that everything went well and they were all happy with their experience.

We were a small group and only two of us like running or had experience with 5ks before this, so they were a little nervous and asked a lot of questions. I did my best to answer their questions and tell them not to be nervous, to just go at their own pace, don’t try to go too fast, and to just enjoy it, have fun and cross the finish line.

As I saw them throughout the race and was happy to see they were all calm and doing their best, nobody got hurt and they have been asking me when the next one is. I told them I don’t know because the races I have in April are all 10k races and I don’t think they’ll like the one I’m thinking about doing in May either, but I’ll let them know when I find a good one. Also they would prefer it with no hills and that’s not always easy to find.

During this race, I wanted to beat last year’s time, 38 minutes, and I probably would have been able to or at least close to that because it wasn’t as hot as last year but I made one big mistake during the beginning of the race. I noticed my watch wasn’t marking my run, so instead of ignoring it and just running, I started walking and concentrating on my watch, trying to fix it. I still wouldn’t be able to rely on that time because the race had already begun but I kept trying because it was a new watch.

I later figured out how to sync it and have been able to use everything during my workouts this week. I should have figured that out before the race but now I know for next time.

Now I have to get ready for my April races.
