I think one of the many things that can help you heal from whatever situation you’re going through is charing your experience and talking to other people. You never know how many others are out there going through the same thing and are ready to share their experience with you and help.
I was reminded of this today when I returned to the support group we found in 2012, after coming home. As things got busy and complicated we stopped going, but decided to go back today. I forgot how welcoming a support group is and how much you can learn from each other.
I met a couple of new people and saw some who I knew from before, we shared experiences, offered support, and even gave each other names of doctors and therapists. The best part was giving people hope, hope that they can make it, they can get their life back because there is always a way, no matter if doctors say otherwise. All the other veterans and I, told the new folks we’ve all heard doctors say we can’t do anything else, and we all proved them wrong. “Don’t listen to them”, we said, “that is not true. You can do it.”
I was reminded of all the good this support group does and just like it helped me when I was lost, it’s my turn to pay it forward and help others who are lost in this overwhelming situation. It’s a tough road but with the help of those around you, a lot of courage and will to fight, everyone can do it.
