In October 2024, one year ago, I joined Freddy’s Runners and throughout the year I have been running four times a week. All this time, I have gotten used to running outside, usually at the track or promenade. Last week, however, I had to change that a little.
I was on vacation and couldn’t go to a track. However, I did have a treadmill at my aunt’s home where I was visiting. It took me a little longer to finish my runs because I had a little trouble adjusting the speed, but I only had to finish 3 and 4 miles for the first two days. Also, the treadmill is really nice when it’s s rainy, windy and cold outside.
After those first two days, I was sure my next run would go well too, but I wasn’t counting on the longer distance and different location. This time I wasn’t in my aunt’s basement, I was at the gym at the hotel I was staying at and I had to run more. This time it was 10 kilometers (6.2 miles).
I’m usually able to silence and distract myself from everything around me with music while I run. This time I couldn’t get away from anything or anyone, so I kept getting distracted. When I got to 3.25 miles, I was ready to be done; I wasn’t tired, I could keep running. I was just so bored of looking in front of me and seeing the same thing.

I decided I had to take a small break from running but I couldn’t sit down and rest; if I did that I wouldn’t get back on the treadmill. All I needed was a distraction, so I did short strength and core videos. Then I went back to the treadmill to finish those three miles.

A run I should have finished in a little over one hour, without taking a break, took me two hours on a treadmill, with a break. Maybe if I was more used to running like that it would be easier but right now, I’m just ready to get back to the track. The treadmill is boring. We are so lucky we live in Puerto Rico were we can run outside all year long.
On the positive side, my ankle doesn’t hurt!
