Today I had my yearly January visit to the neurologist and just like I suspected, it was packed. Mondays are always really busy because both doctors are seeing patients and they are also running different tests such as EEGs on patients. I waited in the hallway and tried to calm unhappy patients, telling them that was normal but they are fast. Maybe I should have added that I’ve been a patient for over ten years so they believed me.

The conversation with the doctor went well, he was happy to hear that I haven’t had any seizures and that on April 8th, I will be seizure free for 10 years. The good news came with talk on another EEG later this year, and I’m already dreading dealing with the aftermath of that.

I also told him I have been running for a few months and that I have been getting dizzy sometimes. He didn’t have any concerns about running or getting dizzy. He said that getting dizzy during races was normal for someone who hasn’t been doing this for a long time.

He suggested I ask my coach about the glucose gels that runners, cyclists and other athletes use for races and workout. He said it could just be that I need more carbs. When I talked to my coach about it, the first thing he asked me was, what do you eat for breakfast? I wasn’t sure what to tell him because my breakfast can go from a small mallorca, bagel or muffin, to a ham and cheese sandwich to just some orange juice or even just a Coke Zero.

He quickly told me I need to drink more orange juice and eat a good breakfast before I run in the morning. I need to work on this because breakfast has never been my favorite meal. That is why I don’t have this problem in the afternoon or at night because I always have a big lunch and I’m still full when I run or workout.

I will keep this in mind next time I run in the morning and before my next 5k. The race is at 6:00 AM so I will have to eat a good breakfast before the race.
